Wow, I had never heard of the Devil’s Pool! How cool!! And a little scary! LOL. As for the Island of the Dolls, I don’t really think it’s all that scary (intentionally). I’ve been through Mexican jungles and canals where there is only the occasional inhabitant. It doesn’t sound like this guy was a hermit, just a Mexican farmer with maybe a little mental or emotional disorder. I think because he chose to collect dolls, it resonates with a bit of the Hollywood horror imagery that tourists tap into. Too bad. I wish I could everyone knew “my Mexico.” It’s kind of like I wish everyone knew “my New Orleans.” When I lived there, there was a theme park called Jazzland. After Katrina, it was deserted and now it has become one of those “creepy” tourist destinations. There are some photos on this website: http://www.lovethesepics.com/2011/05/creepy-crusty-crumbling-illegal-tour-of-abandoned-six-flags-new-orleans-75-pics/
I’m not sure if it’s because I’m sensitive to mental illness or because I know all too well what hurricanes leave behind, but I’m not sure that I like that places such as this have become increasingly popular tourist destinations. But, I have been known to be a stick in the mud. LOL. I can definitely see the draw. I myself am fascinated my the ruins of Chernobyl, so there ya go. I wonder if anyone else has any interesting travel oddities? I recall my sister telling my about a museum of torture that she visited in Italy. Talk about running away screaming!

(Oh, side note about the elephant riding – I got to ride one at the circus when I was a little kid, and afterward my parents tell me how terrified they were because all I talked about for months was wanting to join the circus to “be the elephant rider with the sparkly outfits and the feathers in her hair.” They don’t like to let me forget that I could’ve been a circus performer. LOL.)

How informative, and thank you for sharing this, Helen! I certainly meant no disrespect; in fact, I only looked at the pictures and did not read any text. That’s inattention for ya! Again, I would never dream of making disparaging remarks about anyone’s heritage, or appear insensitive to issues of mental illness. My apologies!

Loved the photos of Six Flags — especially the effects the photographer put in afterwards. Sad and creepy, but fascinating.

And don’t go thinking about running away to join the circus…you have my son to take care of. :P

LOL, no worries!!! I never thought you were being disrespectful or making disparaging remarks at all! I forget that I always see the serious side of everything. (It’s unintentional; Lars can tell you it’s one of my personality flaws.) I thought that the travel sites were neat! I was just already familiar with the dolls. Now if I could just get over my fear of heights I’d be golden for that Devil’s Pool. :)
