I guess it had to happen sometime

And yesterday was it.

For the first time in 396 days, I missed writing a blog post. I guess it had to happen; nothing is constant in this world. But you need to know that in order for me to miss writing for a day, the reason had to be major.

And it was.

Looking back on the last year, I’ve had some major stress in my life — much of which I have shared with my RtB fiends. But yesterday was an exception. That is to say, yesterday was consummately stressful. Had to be, right? Or I’d have written to you.

I won’t go into the details quite yet, but the wheels pretty much fell off. They might fall off tonight, too — before rehearsal ever begins. There’s some stress for ya, boys & girls.

So, what does one do when one is so incredibly stressed, there seems to be nowhere to turn? The answer: seek solace in things that transcend mere daily existence.

Yeah, that’s it. I feel better already.

So, sports fans…

…are you ready for the week from Hades? Ready, steady…..kA-BLaM

Happens every year. Production week, I mean. For those not of the theater persuasion, it’s basically the week where everything comes together (and falls apart) in anticipation of opening on the weekend.

After auditions back in December, rehearsals beginning on MLK Day, my bizarre illness, snow days galore, mono and a horrible flu strain making their way through the cast, countless setbacks and other wonderful issues that honk me off so I won’t explain them out in fronta God and everyone…we’re opening in 5 days. So it begins.

I’ve been asked why I put myself (and my students) through this. Like many passions, only those who know, know. I’ve had people tell me — hundreds of times, actually — that they would die of heart failure if they had to get up in front of a crowd and perform. I can’t relate to that, I guess. There are those of us who absolutely live for that thrill. I know I always did. And now I get the chance to live it again, albeit vicariously.

I’m looking forward to seeing my students get the payoff for the work they’ve done. I know that I am not always pleasant to work with. Sometimes I’ve thought, “I wouldn’t blame them if they walked out.” I’m just glad they haven’t.

But hey…the week is young.

Random Neuron Firings

Truly random today, my fiends.

  1. I guess I just wasn’t born to understand the attraction.
  2. Eventually, the truth always emerges.
  3. Sometimes, I tire of fighting the good fight. Ya know?
  4. This kid brings me incredible joy.
  5. In two weeks, I will be tested in part on material I haven’t studied enough in a subject on which I never took a single class.
  6. Wasn’t it just a matter of time?
  7. I wonder how Bando is doing…I must call her.
  8. Stein and four of my students are plotting against me. Must purchase body armor. And this.
  9. Charlie Manson is 74. Man…tempus fugit.
  10. This month’s pet peeve: people who habitually pass the buck.
  11. I hate everyone and everything (except, well, you know…you).

All-nighter

You don’t dare do too many of those.

I pulled one last night, then went to rehearsal all morning. Then I came home and had dinner with Jakey, Hannah and #1 Son. That was fun.

Looking forward to next week…every night until 9. Studying? What is this studying of which you speak?

BoomR is a god

Ya know…

Your friends — they make you laugh. They understand when you’re upset, and rejoice with you when you’re happy. They commiserate on bad days, and celebrate with you on the good ones.

Then there are the times when your friends feel (sometimes from a great distance) that you’re stressing about stuff, and that you might need something to pick up your spirits.

Sometimes, your friends just make you grateful.

Look what Boom Boom sent me, all the way from Dallas.

Now friends, that’s a friend. BoomR, you are ab-fab – thank you so much! I love you! (Chocolate bars didn’t stay all pretty like that for long…)
